Overflowwing and then some....

Hello All,

Hope this post finds you healthy and happy. We are still fighting the cold/cough here from the dry air, but nothing serious anymore. All who had malaria have recovered very well. It only takes 1 to 3 days for the medicine to really help you feel better. The Malaria medicine here is for the type of malaria here, so it works fast and is very effective. Also no major side effects. Some of the missionaries here have never even had malaria, some say they got it once and then not again as they then have the immunities in their blood.

Overflowwing and then some... is in regard to meetings in our home. There were 192 in attendance on Sunday! Even the Tuesday night book study is overflowwing. They are now having two bookstudies *one upstairs and one downstairs, starting this week. The new KH is coming along well we hope to start meeting there in February.

Shelby, Lorelle and I will be starting the ASL, American Sign Language course in February. There are a lot of deaf here and even right around our house. We had started with the French group but learned at the district convention that the help really is needed with the ASL. As the French speaking in the area often know English or Krio as well as French, also many of the French that were here during the war time have since gone back to there countries no longer at war. We will all attend the ASL bookstudy on Saturday afternoons. The little ones especially enjoy learning and they really liked singing/signing the songs at convention.

At the District Convention an announcement was made for Bethel Volunteers needed and a meeting for those interested. Shelby attended and later filled out an application. This Monday she went in for her interview and was asked to work Mondays in the laundry with a single bethelite sister. There are many single sisters serving here. This was one of the first things I noticed on my first visit to Sierra Leone. I felt comfortable and safe here, because we know that Jehovahs Organizations would not assign single missionary sisters here if it were not safe.

Last Saturday we enjoyed a Pizza Party, yes Pizza! One of the traveling brothers who works on construction, built a brick oven at Bethel. They are Lisa and Rob, many there in NH know them, they say Hi! The kids all ate a lot of pizza! Hunter especially, he even helped Rob with making one. But not any others cause he was too busy eating :) It is still a major talking point with the kids, they had a great time, Lisa and Rob even showed them line dancing and an Elephant game they learned from either Central or South America, sorry can't remember the country. They have traveled alot the past 15 years.

The puppies are doing well, Shelby is teaching Ludo to listen to her in Mende. Eagle is doing english/english krio. I don't think any of us still speak straight English.

The kids are doing well with their school work. Lyam has really taken off with his reading, he completed 4 small chapter books this past couple weeks. We are so proud of him, it really took him a long time to learn, but seems to really have it down now. He even started some dictionary usage lessons this week.

Three weeks until Dennis comes home..... then time to party, we haven't had icecream since he left, so we will have a treat when he comes. Funny thing, Dennis' favorite is pistachio, and here they usually only have a few flavors in the supermarket, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, mango and pistachio! When we were in ND we had the hardest time finding pistachio, but here it is always available.

Yesterday, Hunter and I walked together to bring Shelby to Bethel, then we walked to the supermarket to refill the water jugs. He picked out a candy pack, I wasn't sure how it would be but we would try it. Low and behold it was just like peanut m n m's,
you can get m n m's here, but expensive, this candy was not expensive and was the same, just from a different country.

We have learned of some who have just found this site, please feel free to read back posts and make note of the post to find pictures that Dennis put on a site. Welcome to all, it is good to have contact with so many friends and family around the world.
You are welcome to send short personal emails to LS2N2@yahoo.com. Short only because sometimes the server here is very slow and we don't want to miss any communications. Shelby and Lorelle would love to receive emails as well as the rest of us :)

Keep warm, all those in the North East! Heard you have had record snows.

May Jehovah be will all,
Lorie

Just some extras-

Hello Everyone, this is Shelby. Mum posted earlier this week but forgot a couple things so I'll write them now.
I have the honor of tell a gross story about Lorie, a little payback.:) All in good fun. Mum and I were coming around a corner in service, and there was a big tree, or teke in Krio, and Mum felt something hit her. She thought it was maybe gird dropping 'cause it was all slimy and sort of watery, but no it was a dead mouse with half its head chewed off. Something was caring it up in to the tree and dropped it right on Mum when we walked by, we did not get to see what did it though. It did make for an interesting afternoon and a good laugh for me, after what had happened with the fly.
I was in service on Sunday after the meeting with Isha, one of the girls up stairs, I started talking to this lady and her husband, when this man comes over. He starts saying that they shouldn't listen to me because I am white and he has travel to England and America and that he was put down by whites. My reply was "I no JC visitor come so so, I am a resident, dis me own home." He was taken back at my Krio, I told him that I lived here not a tourist. He said "You live here, please talk to them. You listen to her." He told the couple and he pulled up a bench for Isha and I, unfortunately he didn't stay, but the couple is a very nice return visit now.:)
We finally learned where the word 'Opatoe'(I don't know the actual spelling.:)) comes from. It is a Temne word, and when the first sailors landed in Freetown at the time Temne territory, they were from Opatoe, Portugal. So when they were trying to tell the Temne "We are from Opatoe" in just over time came to be in the Temne language that Opatoe means a white person.
There was a funny point that Br. William S. made in his talk, it was on how to use our time wisely in the field ministry. He said,"The past is history, the future is a mystery and today is a gift. That is why it is called the present." Everyone laughed. I really thought that you all would like to share in the humor. He was talking about how we can't rewind time and it won't stop so how are we using our time in the ministry. It was a really nice part. He said "We all have 86,400 seconds in each day how will we use each one of those 86,400 seconds?" It is really something to think about.
Well that's all for now. They are just some small extras Mum had forgotten on Tuesday. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
Warm Christian love,
Shelby.

de breeze done blow

Kushay,

de breeze done blow, last week the hamatan winds came in and blew very strong, even cold. Had to close the windows at night for 3 nights and use light blankets, can you imagine such a thing :)

Last Weds. we didn't even sweat one drop! It was cool out and very comfortable, although the strong winds dried everything and even our skin started to get dry. It was funny though to see people in winter coats and hats.

The dust is strong during this dry season and the heat is coming back already this week.... so much for a long winter. The dry season is hard on the feet, the dust drys them out too much. I have been soaking them and scrubbing with a strong brush and then putting lots of cream, they are looking like "normal" feet again.

Lyam and Shelby have recovered well from the Malaria, now DJ and Lorelle are on the medication. They both came down this week with Malaria, but we are confident they are responding well to the medication.

We know that it takes time to settle and get used to the seasons and colds/flus etc in a new environment so we are being patient day to day.

The ministry is still a wonderful highlight of our week and we continue to have more people requesting studies.

For convention one of the young brothers in our hall made a special effort to invite one of Dennis studies from Juba. Juba is a good 2 hours plus of travel time from the stadium, yet after convention on Friday, young Emanual took transport, changing at junctions and walking a lot, to Juba. He invited the study and he came the next day with Emanual, what a zeal shown and what a blessing from the determination of the young brother.

On January 1 the service group met in Regent Village, a very nice place to preach with great response, but too outlying to reach regularly, we only preach there once or twice a year. Some of the brothers left their homes at 6 am to make the service group at 9. They walk most of the way as it would be 4 to 5 transport junctions which would cost more than a days pay for them.

When in Regent Village I saw a wonderful puppy, but was not looking :)
Following week Shelby saw some in town in the ministry and asked daddy if she could get one..... when I took her to get one, they really were not healthy, so we could not get one of that litter. I took her to Regent Village and she quickly fell in love with little Ludo *prounounced Lue Dough) We also brought home his brother who I had seen in service on January 1. His name is Eagle, from Isaih 40:31,

"those hoping in Jehovah will regain power. They will mount up like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. they will walk and not tire out"

Shelby and I have begun regular pioneering and this scripture is truly our comfort and fortification.

Please note that last week both Shelby and I added a post, so two last week, just one this week though :)

We all send our love and greetings!
May Jehovah be with You,
Lorie

Kushay Kushay, Hello Hello

Greetings from Sierra Leone,

Sorry for the delay in posting, things are going well for us, just extremely busy.

As Shelby filled in a couple weeks ago in her post, I walka too much (beware some Krio may start to mingle with the English :) Nicole and I walka for over 4 hours in the invitation campaign for the convention, we covered a lot of territory. But were both exhausted afterwards. My legs cramped too much for me to go on Tuesday for service or the internet. Monday service group was not supported until we came, now there are two to three sisters, sometimes five that meet, so it is growing. Nicole and I really wanted to be sure the area that is seldom worked received their invite so we persevered. The people were so thankful and we will return to some for further discussions.

The children are doing well now, Lorelle has a small cough from all the dust that blows in this dry season, but nothing to worry about. The evenings have been much cooler with very strong breezes. I even had to close my windows to my room the other night. Last week we had a bit of a scare with Malaria, it was the first time for Shelby or Lyam to have it and it hit hard, they came down with it very fast, no forwarning signs. We are prepared though as our landlord upstairs is a Sister in the cong. and a nurse, she always has meds on hand. Since Shelby came down with it in the evening we called Dr. to come, he is a brother in the Cockerill No. congregation, he came quickly and gave her injection and medicine. I took Shelby to the hospital next morning for the Malaria test and to get other tests to rule out typhoid etc. Lyam was during the day so I took him to the hospital for test to be sure it was diagnosed proper and than he received the meds.

They both have recovered well and were fine for the convention. Shelby had come down Sunday before convention and Lyam on Weds. Convention was amazing! Over 2500 in attendance on Sunday, a new high peak attendance. Also baptism of 53! A record high! The youngest was little sister Toby from Port Loko at 8 years old. She has already seen 3 of her studies come to baptism..... so now the teacher was baptised after the students.

There was also a young girl of 11 with her mother baptized together. They were studied with by a 13 year old sister and her mother. The 13 year old sister had been baptized at the age of 8.

We had the priviledge of joinging the ASL (sign language) group for the convention, we had been inquiring of joining the classes at bethel, but they have not begun yet. I took them in Manchester NH years ago and have really been wanting to refresh
what I had used in the past. The kids really enjoyed it, especially Hunter, he was the first one up for the songs, getting in front to follow along with the hand talking as he calls it. We are all looking forward to continuiing in this field as there is a great need. On one of my previous trips to SL I had the priviledge of attending a wedding with Shelby, one of the sisters to the bride is deaf, she was the first deaf sister baptized in SL, it was wonderful to see her again. She and others express their thanks to all that helped to send the dvd mini screen players to them, they are such a blessing to have. We are hoping for Dennis to come with more this trip as the need continues to grow. There are now 4 baptized here and many more studying and attending book study. We will start attenting the group for book study in two weeks.

We know of three of Dennis studies that for sure attended the convention as we saw them in person, but with so many people there may very well have been more. In fact today we heard that the lady who brings us fish cakes and riche cakes, two times a week, attended on Sunday. We did not see her in person, but a young one in our congregation did. Our driver also attended the second half of Sunday afternoon, he is hoping to attend all of the Assemby in May. We are so thankful for the invitations that are provided to distribute!

Hunter had his first trip to Market yesterday with me, he did very well and even was chatty on the ride home. I had heard there was a library for children in Freetown so took Hunter to find it, we succedded and are now in the process of registering. It is a very nice childrens library just 10 minute drive from the market in town, so i am hoping to bring the children and let them browse while i do market on Monday afternoons, after morning service.

Thankyou to all who are able to send small personal emails, it means so much! I had hoped to get the internet phone working but have been unable, the settings have changed and the process to update would cost more than I want/need to spend. So for now we will continue to use the Internet Cafe once a week.

All going to superbowl parties, enjoy some for me!!!! I am amazed how much I miss watching sports, even golf!

The congregations will continue to use our home into February as they are now approved to put tile and ceiling in the newly constructed KH. This will be good, especially in the rainny season, without the ceiling the tin roof would make too much noise.

Many friends send their greetings!

Love to all, may Jehovah be with you,
Lorie

The Convention by Shelby

Hi this is Shelby. The convention was amazingly encouraging!! Many of the brothers and sisters that we are good friend with were interviewed. There were 53 baptized and one of them was little Tobi (8) Medinylo, the family from Port Loko and one of her sisters Bible studies. There was one deaf brother baptized also. The growth can be clearly seen. We had 2,588 on Sunday afternoon, and last year only about 1,800. It is truly growing, the tract campaign helped too, there were many visitors.
We had to bring cushion seats we are just not used to the cement yet. I truly admire the friends for they enduring the hard seats with no back and the sun beating on them. Luckily there is a over hang that shades the area by 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
On Saturday and Sunday we sat with the ASL group. We were talking to the brother about maybe coming to some classes and he said why don't you stay down here and learn some signs. So we did, it was so nice. I really like being able to talk to the deaf friends now even if it is just How are you? and I'm good. It is really nice and they all have such be smiles and open hearts. There are four baptized deaf and we had a peak of 12 deaf at the convention. The ASL group is really growing as there are many in our territory who are deaf. We are all looking forward to learning and helping others.
On of the nieces we arranged a driver to bring, as it would be too tight in the car with already six in the back, her and her younger sister. The older one is very nice, they live in Texas and were visiting for two weeks. She had never been to a meeting before, but she really liked it and she was able to get the new release "Come be my follower." She also asked her parents that when she got home if she could contact the Wittiness's and study. They said yes. It is so encouraging that the truth can truly touch some one. She had a little trouble following the Krio, but was thankful to me for sharing my Bible and she read my notes, and liked what she heard. She also had taken some ASL classes before so she was able to understand a little from that. That was Saturday, she couldn't come Sunday because she had to pack to leave Monday, yet she was very happy she did come and is looking forward to studying.:)
It was so nice to get such timely reminders and the Drama was- is probably my favorite Drama, with the fact that he was so humble and yet it changed so quickly and how he tried to make him self higher, missing the true gifts from Jehovah. The way the brothers portrayed him is very comical yet serious too, it is a Drama that I will never forget.
Mum is posting right now, too. So if there are doulbe information oops.:) I was able to use English, Krio, French, ASL, and a tiny Arabic with the friends. It was nice to see that no matter where you are from or what language you speak you can still benifit from the Bible. I had alot of fun trying to keep the languages straight though. I am trying to learn Krio, Arabic, Temne, Mende, ASL and still keep up my French and Japanese study. It's alot fun.:)
Well I am going to sign out, I hope you are all doing good and staying warm.

Cold and snowy with reports of warm sunny weather

Hello everyone,
I,m back to work here in NH and enjoying our good old New England winter. Lots of snow and cold today, I'm just now thawing out. It seems every year I'm framing a house on the lake in January with the howling winds. I should be enjoying the cool breezy season in SL with my family were it is a cool 75 degrees, but we have to eat so here I am. I am enjoying visiting with many of you freinds and sharing some experiences first hand. Lorie called today to ask me to post for her for she and the kids are going to the Distric Convention at the football stadium and she won't get to the internet cafe' this week. Our freinds the Medieto's, a family of five that moved to Port Loco from Nigeria a year ago, stayed with our family on wednesday night in preparation for the convention. Lorie will be taking all of our children plus nieces of a brother in the hall and two more nieces of another brother in the hall, so they won't have to walk for hours. They will try to fit one adult and10 kids plus the driver in a little Nissain Prevera that we hire for transport.
Shelby and Lyam are getting over a bout with Malaria. They both had a fever but with proper meds and care it is treatable now. Today both were up and about and are planning on attending the DC. Pray that all the freinds will be able to sit comfortably on concrete bleachers for three days and listen and enjoy the convention. The stadium has no seats they sit on concrete with the person behind them having their feet at your back. The stadium was designed for sportig events where most of the fans are standing, and the event only last for two to three hours. Remeber this when you complain about Portland. Oh by the way they are out in the open air as well, no ac just plenty of sun. We all have to put up with something in this time of the end, so we bundle up for the cold and sit on cushioned seats, while they enjoy the sunny with concrete seats. Doesn't the new system look better everyday.
I've come to appreciate Jehovah is o so good. That no matter what we face each day their is some one going throug something worse, and yet that does not minimzie our trial, in fact it magnifies it in the sense that to Jehovah's glory he gives each of us the power to endure. This humbles us, shows us the need for realience on Jehovah each day, and it maginfies Jehovah as the only source of true happiness, the only one even close to capable of helping the world of mankind and it's individual parts you and me at the same time. When we widen out with our associations in Jehovah's organization we come to appriciate Malachi 3 :10 to the point were there is no more want. Dennis
